Analysis of the eect of the coastal discontinuity on near-surface ̄ow

چکیده
Conditional sampling is used herein to examine the eect of fetch, stability, and surface roughness changes on wind speeds in the coastal zone. Using data from an oshore wind farm it is shown that at a distance of 1.2±1.7 km from the coast, up to a height of 20 m above the surface, dierences in wind speed distributions from onshore and oshore masts are statistically signi®cant for ̄ow moving oshore under all stability conditions. In contrast, dierences between the distribution of wind speeds at 38 and 48 m at masts located at the coast and in the coastal zone are not signi®cant for ̄ow moving oshore, indicating that ̄ow at these heights is not fully adjusted to the change in surface roughness (land to sea). These ®ndings are in accordance with calculations of the internal boundary layer (IBL) height which indicate that the IBL would frequently be below the two upper measurement heights at 1.2±1.6 km from the coast. The analyses presented here indicate that the wind speed distribution at a potential oshore wind farm site is not solely dependent on fetch (distance from the coast) but also depends on the stability climate.

Seasonal Variations of Seawater Properties in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Seasonal variations of the seawater properties (e.g. temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll-a) in western part of the southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea near the Iranian coast were studied. A portable CTD probe was applied for profiling from sea surface to bottom at 23 stations. Maximum depth of the profiling stations was more than 470 m in the study area. Vertical structure of ...
متن کاملAssessing Chlorophyll-a in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Caspian Sea with an average depth of 27m is the largest enclosed water body in the world. Despite its enormity and valuable biotic and economic resources, investigations on the biota and seawater properties are mosaic at best. In previous studies, the monitoring of the chlorophyll-a concentrations in the Southern Caspian Sea was organized based on satellite data sets however, vertical dis...
متن کاملTemperature, Salinity and Density Measurements in the Coastal Waters of the Rudsar, South Caspian Sea
CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) data collected in the coastal waters of Rudsar in summer 2008 were analyzed to identify the isothermal layers, thermocline depth and vertical structure of seawater properties. During the survey, probe was released into the seawater column down to 117 m depth. Results showed a vertical variation of temperature between 29°C at the sea surface and less tha...
متن کاملA Fourth Order Formulation of DDM for Crack Analysis in Brittle Solids
A fourth order formulation of the displacement discontinuity method (DDM) is proposed for the crack analysis of brittle solids such as rocks, glasses, concretes and ceramics. A fourth order boundary collocation scheme is used for the discretization of each boundary element (the source element). In this approach, the source boundary element is divided into five sub-elements each recognized by a ...
متن کاملEssential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran
Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...
